Our People: Kim Davis
Kim has enjoyed the creative side of life from a young age, stating “I have always been innovative and creative and naturally expressed this by evolving and experimenting through hair, makeup and art.”
After graduating from a six-month introductory hairdressing course, Kim received a full apprenticeship and achieved the Trade Certificate in Hairdressing through a local polytech. After some life experience, Kim became a tutor to pass on her skills.
In addition to tutoring, Kim has owned two hairdressing salons, the last being in Rarotonga which attracted the attention of international clientele through a hair and makeup wedding package. Kim was able to secure some lucrative contracts from NZ and Australian based magazines and work with well-known celebrities. As a way of giving back to the community, Kim’s salon also sponsored Miss Cook Island, which she says enabled her to fully immerse in the island culture. In collaboration with the Hairdressing Advisory Board (which Kim was a member of), she was able to start an NZQA approved hairdressing school which has become a huge success throughout the Cook Islands.
Kim particularly enjoys the bridal side of hair and makeup, “[My] forte is creating a full wedding package for brides that I originally established while in Rarotonga. This includes a full pampering session for guests with spray tanning, makeup, hair-ups and manicures.” Kim’s experience in this comes in particularly handy with our Makeup Artistry programme, where students learn tanning, brow services, hairstyling, nails and freelance business skills.
“I really enjoy being able to share my extensive knowledge with all the students and to also keep learning from my fellow colleagues.”
