Servilles Academy 2020 Round-Up
What. A. Year.
In a year like no other, we’d like to start off by acknowledging the patience and flexibility of our students, as well all the hard work put in by our academy team during 2020. Although it’s undoubtedly been a bit of a weird one, we wanted to take a look back on 2020 and celebrate the highlights over the last 12 months.

The year kicked off to a great start as we welcomed back our students, as well as welcoming in some new classes. In March, we had our always-anticipated in-house comp, which was so much fun! You can check out all of our winners here or head to the gallery to see some more snaps.

At the end of March we entered a lockdown, due to the global pandemic. Ah… lockdowns… During this time, we continued to educate our future hairdressers, barbers and makeup artists online – a strange and unfamiliar setting for such hands-on, social programmes – but we did it! Our students and team adapted to the #WTFlife as they utilised a variety of platforms such as Google Classrooms, Facebook (for live demos) and online quizzes to continue learning to the best of their ability. Students were still expected to check-in to class and complete assignments, all from the comfort of home. For practical work, hairdressing and barbering students were able to use mannequins and those in their ‘bubble’ to practice skills and techniques, whilst our makeup students practiced on themselves, people in their bubbles and face charts.
Though away from the active help from their tutors and usual environment, our students produced some beautiful work.

We were also able to still (virtually) catch up with our newly established Student Leadership Team, who were able to talk about their learning experience during lockdown.
In early May we came back into the building. It was exciting to be getting our teeth stuck into practical work and the ‘new business as usual’ (all whilst maintaining social distancing and stringent hygiene rules).

In June, we were able to welcome the classes who were meant to join us some weeks before, so it was awesome to have some new faces around the academy. Although a lot of events our students were due to partake in during this period had been cancelled or postponed, our makeup team were able to work with NZX Next Dance Company for some fun videos.
In August, Auckland entered another lockdown… Thankfully, this one was shorter we knew the drill at this point!
September was a busy one, especially with us being able to return to the academy. We celebrated Maori Language Week, with hairdressing student Portia doing her Pepeha and encouraging each other to try speak Te Reo a little more.
We also acknowledged Mental Health Awareness Week.
On 21st September, we had a creative shoot day titled ‘TBC’. The photoshoot was all about celebrating our students and letting them take creative control with their hair, makeup and outfits. Read all about the day here.

Our makeup students finally had the chance to work on a show in October that they’d been looking forward to all year – Mary Poppins! The students loved getting out and working behind-the-scenes on a big production, which was a huge success.

In November, we had Makeup Artistry and Salon Support classes start and the tutoring team worked hard to help get current students on track for graduations.
After what felt like the longest year ever, December had come (and brought along the summer weather, yay!). Our hair and makeup students were able to work on the annual Whitecliffe Graduate Fashion Show at the Town Hall, where they created some beautiful looks.

We also had a couple of fun in-class photoshoots, where the barbers took over the salon and our SS hairdressing class created some awesome work!

Then, before we all knew it, it was the students’ last day. We enjoyed a graduation and (lots of) pizza and said farewells to Sha (Academy Admin) and Chanelle (Hairdressing Tutor).

Over this past week, our tutor and admin teams have had ‘review week’, where we’ve all come together to reflect on the year and start planning for the year ahead. We’ve taken part in a range of activities, including a partaking in a professional makeup demo and a wellness session with a PT and yoga instructor.

Tonight, we have our annual awards evening and Christmas party! Stay tuned for the award recipients for 2020…
