Complete a hairdressing, barbering or makeup qualification with the assistance of Fees Free!
You can get one year of tertiary study or two years’ training up to the value of $12,000 fees-free. Fees Free covers your course fees but does not cover course-related costs or living costs.
DO I QUALIFY?
You may be eligible for Fees Free if you are:
a New Zealander or ordinarily resident in New Zealand; and
a recent secondary school leaver; or
not a recent secondary school leaver but have undertaken less than half a year of tertiary study or training.
Are you planning to study or train in 2021?
This guide explains what you need to know about Fees Free, what you need to do and how much you can get. Are you thinking about starting tertiary education?
New learners get one year of Fees Free study or two years of training
If you do provider-based study you can get the equivalent of one year’s full-time study (up to the value of $12,000) Fees Free. If you train through a transitional industry training organisation (ITO) and your training is not covered by the Targeted Training and Apprenticeship Fund, you and your employer’s training costs are covered for the first 24 months of your training programme (up to the value of $12,000).
What does Fees Free cover?
Fees Free covers:
tuition fees
compulsory course costs, and
compulsory student services fees.
Who can get Fees Free?
Those at school or recent school leavers
For provider-based study, you can get Fees Free if you have been enrolled in a school in or after 2019 (other than as an adult student) and you meet the citizenship or residency requirements. For training through ITOs, you can get Fees Free if you have been enrolled in a school in or after 2019 (other than as an adult student) and you’re legally entitled to live and work in New Zealand.
Adult learner?
If you haven’t been at school for a while, we will need to check how much study and training you’ve done to find out if you can get Fees Free. If you’ve done less than half a year of tertiary study you need to complete a statutory declaration to declare you’re eligible. We’ll take you through this process at feesfree.govt.nz.
What’s next?
If you’re eligible for fees-free you will still need to apply for a Student Loan via StudyLink if you want to borrow course-related costs or living costs.
