Industry Talks: Sam Rogers

Where are you from?
I have only ever lived out in West Auckland which is a bummer, I would rather be anywhere else than Auckland right now. But yeah! I’m from West Auckland!

When did you start working?
I think I started Barbering when I was about 20, 21 maybe 22. So like three years ago. what got me into it was I had started to shave myself with a cutthroat razor and I really enjoyed that, I thought it was quite cool, quite manly. But yeah one of my workmates at the time I was doing industrial abseiling, he showed me how to use the cutthroat and showed me this video of these dudes ‘Schoolroom barbershop’ in Rotterdam, and showed me some of the haircuts that they would do. He wasn’t a barber but he thought it was cool, I did as well and I thought, that looks pretty fun why don’t I do that as well. The video that actually got me was Skin Fade Pompadour that is still up on their Youtube channel it’s an awesome haircut I still love it. So yeah that’s what got me into Barbering.

SA: If you could live anywhere, where would that be?

SR: It would be either Canada, Scotland or anywhere in Scandinavia,

I have some roots in Scandinavia which would be pretty cool, I could work at Schoolroom, that would be Awesome. Canada seems pretty chill and Scotland is just beautiful.

SA: What trends are you loving at the moment?

SR: I’m not normally a trend kind guy, I’ve just got my style that I want to stick with, which is usually like slicker, cleaner almost rockabilly as well. I am enjoying the undercut on the sides and everything is coming forward with a bit of texture in the front almost like a French crop but not so cropped, I have never liked the harsh line of a crop. It’s fun pulling some texture out of hair sometimes rather than the classic slick which I do much more of.

SA: What advice can you give to someone starting out in their career?

SR: The best advice that I have been given, it depends what context but if you are starting a new business, get a good accountant, they pay for themselves.A good Mantra that I have always lived by, My Dad used to say it all the time. “If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you always got”. So if you are not enjoying something, change it up, do something different.
