Life Beyond Servilles: Clarette's Journey at NZ Fashion Week
We're thrilled to kick off our "Life Beyond Servilles" blog series with Clarette who recently took centre stage as a Key Artist at New Zealand Fashion Week, leading the charge for two sensational shows.
1: Inspirations and Milestones
Q: What has been the most inspiring aspect of the past year for you, and how have these new experiences further molded your career in hairdressing?
A: The past year has been a whirlwind of inspiration, and it all traces back to my workplace, Hairluxx Boutique. The owner's commitment to staying on trend, experimenting with new techniques, and infusing fashion into our daily routine has been a game-changer. The vibrant atmosphere, complete with bold fashion colours, has motivated me to continuously learn, stay abreast of fashion trends, and champion self-confidence in both myself and others.
Q: Can you share any new challenges or exciting projects you've taken on in the realm of hair and makeup? What notable milestones have you reached in your hairdressing journey?
A: Recently, I had the honour of being a Key Artist at New Zealand Fashion Week for two shows—an exhilarating milestone. Curating hair and makeup looks to complement designers' creations was the fun part, but the real challenge was leading a team of 8 to 11 members. Balancing the creative process with managing the team's execution taught me valuable lessons in time management and leadership. Witnessing our collective effort come to life on the runway for two successful shows was incredibly fulfilling.
2: Career Growth
Q: Have you been involved in any fresh competitions, collaborations, or projects since your time at Servilles Academy?
A: Yes, I actively collaborate with industry professionals for styled photoshoots or short film projects. These collaborations allow me to expand my network, contribute to social media content, and indulge my creative side.
3: A Day in the Life
Q: Could you provide us with a glimpse into your typical workweek as a full-time freelance hairdresser and makeup artist?
A: My week is a dynamic blend of fixed hours at Hairluxx Boutique, running my freelance business 'Clarette FX,' and managing various responsibilities—from weddings and special occasions to editorial shoots and commercials. Juggling hair, makeup, team management, admin tasks, and social media content creation has become second nature, making work feel less like a chore and more like a passion.
4: Memorable Projects
Q: Are there any standout projects that you've been a part of recently, and what made them particularly memorable?
A: New Zealand Fashion Week stands out as a forever memorable project. The challenge of orchestrating hair and makeup for a high-profile event and seeing our creative efforts make an impact on the runway was an unparalleled experience.
Q: Can you share any fresh tips and advice for budding makeup artists and hairdressers?
A: Get out there, build connections, and explore every facet of the industry. Try your hand at weddings, film, theatre, and fashion, even in assisting roles. The path you fall into might surprise you, and you might discover a new passion.
Q: What are three practical recommendations you would offer to recent graduates stepping into the industry?
A: Embrace diverse experiences, work alongside professionals in the industry, and focus on continuous learning. Gain skills in client interaction, collaboration, pricing, business, and personal development through hands-on experience.
5: Highs and Challenges
Q: Reflecting on the past year, what do you find most rewarding about being a makeup and hair artist, and have you encountered any new challenges in your freelance career?
A: Reflecting on the past year, I've learned to love every aspect of the hair and makeup industry. My perspective has evolved from a singular focus on big film productions to appreciating all facets of my work. Building a freelance business from scratch, earning over a hundred five-star reviews on Google, and curating a visual journey on social media have brought immense contentment. Working on hair and makeup is not just a job for me; it's a fulfilling career that I wouldn't trade for anything. Join us in celebrating Clarette's exceptional journey from Servilles Academy to the glamour of New Zealand Fashion Week!
