Our People: Alice Donnelly
Say hello to our new makeup tutor, Alice! Alice joined the academy team earlier this year and we’re thrilled to have her as our Level 3 tutor within the makeup department. Alice’s role is to educate our Makeup & Skincare students, teaching them all the essential foundation and creative skills to prepare them for industry or further study in Level 4.
In 2006 Alice moved from England to New Zealand and attended school in Gisborne. Alice, who enjoyed music and art at school, says makeup is a creative industry that enables her to express herself. It was during high school that Alice began to consider makeup as a career pathway following a talk at her high school about turning hobbies into a job. “Getting to create art on the face is the best job.”
In 2016 and 2017, Alice studied level 4 makeup and level 5 special effects. After graduation, she landed a job at Farmers in the beauty department where she gained knowledge on products and confidence with her makeup and customer skills. A year later, Alice was offered a job at the Bobbi Brown Pro store in Britomart, which she views as a career highlight. Following her time at Bobbi Brown, Alice was then employed at M.A.C as a freelance artist before becoming a makeup tutor “helping people gain the skills to become a makeup artist since!”
Through her variety of experiences in the makeup industry, Alice loves meeting new people and learning new things from others. “Getting to work backstage in a high-intensity environment is an incredible rush” Alice admits, and she enjoys working at fashion shows in beautiful and luxurious locations with an ‘all hands on deck’ atmosphere. Alice has built relationships with clients through her numerous freelancing opportunities, enabling her to be invited back on a regular basis to work on theatre productions, weddings, body painting and prosthetic application for shows.
Although only being part of the team for a few of months, Alice feels that the team is like family. “They make work a great place to come and are all so warm and welcoming.”
“It’s always great watching students grow and gain confidence in their skills and themselves”
