STEP 1
Is a Hairdressing Career Right For You?
Choosing a career path is not a decision that should be made lightly. It’s important to think carefully about what you want and how you hope to achieve it.
Things to consider:
What attracted you to a hairdressing career?
Are you creative?
Has someone you know completed a hairdressing course or are working in the industry?
Are you organised, friendly and approachable?
Do you want to study at a school in Auckland filled with like-minded people?
Importantly, are you good under pressure and want a job where no two days are the same?
If you’re ticking all the boxes, starting a hairdressing course could be perfect for you.
Like with any decision, it’s important to do some research. Find out what will be covered within the courses to get a gauge if it’s right for you.
We offer free academy tours and Student For a Day so you can take a look around, meet our tutors & even join in on a class! Interested? Contact our recruitment team on 0800 SERVILLES or 09 308 0690 to book in!
STEP 2
Enrol in the Salon Support (Level 3) Hairdressing Course
While you might be keen to jump into hairdressing and learn everything there is to know, you’ve got to start with the basics. We offer the New Zealand Certificate in Salon Support (Level 3), which covers the foundations of a lifelong career in hairdressing.
Our 34-week Salon Support course content includes hairdressing theory, fashion trends and product knowledge. This course also covers colouring and highlighting, long hair styling, shampooing, blow waving, as well as health and safety, salon systems and client care.
Part of your learning will include partaking in a variety of work experiences. Each year we are involved with New Zealand Fashion Week in Auckland, plus get involved with photoshoots, music videos, charity events and live performances. Here you’ll be able to build your portfolio, network and get a taste for different work environments in Auckland.
STEP 3
Begin the Emerging Stylist (Level 4) Hairdressing Course
Upon completion of the Level 3 Salon Support Hairdressing certificate (whether that be at Servilles Academy or another provider), you may want to build on the skills you’ve already learnt to open up your career options further. Our Level 4 Emerging Stylist course is for students who have previously completed Salon Support and want to take their hairdressing skills to the next level.
In this 34-week course (running Tuesday to Friday) students will learn about consultations, advanced cutting techniques, wet and dry styling, hair for fashion and editorial, plus advanced chemical services. You’ll have the chance to get creative with a variety of cuts and colours, plus learn about salon operations.
In addition to in-class learning and external events, during your training you’ll get plenty of hands-on experience with real clients in our Academy salon. Open Wednesdays and Thursdays, our Academy salon will give you the opportunity to immerse yourself in salon life and furthering prepare for employment in the hairdressing industry.
Level 4 Hairdressing is perfect if:
You want to freelance or open your own salon.
Work locally or internationally
Feel completely ready to transition into real-life hairdressing work
Work in the fast-paced and competitive fashion or film industry
