Industry Talks: Stefany Hall
My hairdressing journey started at Servilles Academy fresh out of high school 15 years ago. I attended hairdressing school during the day and makeup school at night. My class was super focussed and we all pushed and encouraged each other to be the best. This paid off as majority of us in the class left with outstanding certificates.
During my time at Servilles Academy I did work experience at Servilles Takapuna, so when I finished my course I was lucky enough to get a job as a Colourist. I quickly worked my way up the ranks to Senior Stylist and then I became the Colour Specialist Trainer, taking Monday and Wednesday training sessions for the junior staff. These sessions were such a success I then moved into the role of Head Colour Specialist Trainer for Servilles. Taking training sessions for all of the colourists within the company on a Monday at Servilles Academy.

This then led me to my next role as Technical Educator for L’Oreal Professionnel. I spent 3 years visiting salons all over New Zealand taking hands on creative sessions on colour techniques, haircare theory and hair trends. I also facilitated and hosted courses ranging from basic colour theory to high fashion colour techniques, consultation and trend-based cutting and styling sessions.
So far I have had so many highlights in my hairdressing career. From being a young colourist finalist in L’Oreal Colour Trophy when I just finished at the academy, to winning the Redken Ambassador’s photoshoot. But the biggest would have to be the travel I have done. So far my work has not only taken me all around New Zealand but to Australia, Bali, Rarotonga and Spain.

I’ve been so lucky to work with some amazing designers and fellow hairdressers at fashion weeks, photoshoots and New Zealand’s Next Top Model. Also running my own hair teams for runway shows and charity events.
This year I opened my own private hair studio (@manebystefanyhall). Now that I have a daughter, this gives me flexibility to do what I love and have the family balance. In my studio I offer a unique one on one luxury experience for my clients. I specialise in blondes, balayage and bridal hair. I spend my weekdays creating bespoke colours tailored to clients individuality and weekends I can be on location styling weddings.

I am really passionate about sharing knowledge and I believe education is key in hairdressing. Servilles Academy gave me great foundation of knowledge which I have been able to build on in my various roles and experience in the industry.
My advice to someone starting out in the industry? Get ready to work hard!! This is not an easy career choice but it is SOOO rewarding. Take every opportunity that comes your way, attend every course you can and NEVER stop learning!
The hairdressing industry is constantly evolving so who knows where it will be in 5 years’ time but to succeed we have to keep evolving too. For me, my company The Mane Group (@themanegroup_nz) will be launching later this year and I still have lots of goals to smash so watch this space…
