Industry Talks: Zoe Clark

I have been in the industry for 17 years, starting at Servilles Academy straight after finishing high school. My sister Lauren (who is now the Academy Director) actually pointed me into the direction of the Academy having worked at one of the Servilles salons while she was at university. I had always been into hair and this career path felt very comfortable.

My tutors at the academy were really passionate especially Shivaun and my class were all really committed to being the best they could be in industry. It makes a difference to be surrounded by talented and supportive people who are on the same page.  The extra-curricular events like In-House Comps and shoots were also really fun and a way to get creative!

I was passionate about being the best I could so I worked extremely hard, every evening and every Saturday at Me salon under Iain Smith while studying at Servilles Academy to gain as much knowledge and skill as possible and it paid off. It was hard work but made me into a great colourist, then stylist. A four-year stint in the UK opened my eyes and honed my cutting and styling skills which I am forever grateful for.

After having my first child I joined Dry & Tea running its NZ based salons until August 2018.  I started to feel like it was time for something different that could provide something new and more for both me and the industry.

I opened my 4th baby, (I’m a mother of 3) INCO studio in the old Ponsonby Fire Station in February 2019.   Having a clear brand direction and business plan was vital.  The name INCO derives from the sentiment always in good company, it’s what we stand for and what we do every day by creating a warm, friendly and inviting environment for all of our guests. I couldn’t be prouder of where the business and my team are one year on.

I’m fortunate to educate for L’Oreal and have been on the Redken and L’Oréal artistic team for many years now which has been so much fun, allowed me to travel internationally and work alongside some of the best in the world and in NZ.

My future plan is to help and educate stylists and business owners to become the best they can be. Develop great brands, find their identity and create beautiful hair.

My first step was creating a space for anyone and everyone to be a part of, feel comfortable and valued.

My piece of advice to any aspiring hairdresser is… Be prepared to work hard. It’s not easy. With dedication, passion, creativity and determination, you’ll get to where you want to be! Be humble and get on with it.  All jobs are important and no one is above them, with that attitude you’ll be asked back, make amazing industry connections and collaborate with the best hair and makeup artists, brands and photographers.
